Do Your Part – Clear Your Neighborhood’s Fire Hydrants
If you have a fire hydrant near your home and you are able, do your part and clear snow three feet around the hydrant and out to the street so firefighters can get to it without delay.
Clearing the hydrant ensures that there is a path to the roadway and that the hydrant is visible and easily accessible.
If the hydrant is buried and the fire department responds, firefighters may need to spend precious minutes clearing the hydrant so they can hook their hoses up to it.
Fire engines carry some water to start fighting a fire, but if the firefighting is protracted, they will need the water supply from hydrants to continue firefighting efforts.
Fire engines may also need to hook up to the hydrant pre-emptively.
Immediate access the water supply will allow firefighters to extinguish a fire quickly and reduce the chance that there may be a loss of life or property.
