The Sandy Spring Volunteer Fire Department is selectively recruiting new members, and there is a role for you.
From Firefighter and EMT to Auxiliary and Administrative support, we offer many categories of membership to fit your background, your schedule, and your goals. No experience is required to begin, though applicants for EMT or Firefighter roles complete a physical (free of charge) and a background check.
Volunteering is the ultimate way to give back. You will help save and protect lives, learn teamwork and leadership in real situations, and build skills that carry into every part of your life, all within a friendly, family-oriented department. It is a meaningful commitment of time and dedication, and one our members find deeply rewarding.
We have an inclusive membership structure with six types of membership, so individuals from all backgrounds and experience levels can take part in supporting the community and the department.
Provide critical pre-hospital care during people’s most difficult moments. Training is extensive but manageable, and after certification you may lead an entire ambulance crew. Advancement to paramedic and EMS supervisor is open to you, all with free training.
Respond to fires, rescues, and emergencies ranging from car accidents to river and mountain incidents. Earn certification as a Firefighter II and qualify for specialized rescue teams. Many members reach officer credentials in about two and a half years.
Support the department through a variety of auxiliary activities, including staffing the canteen unit at major events across the county. No physical or training courses required.
Lend your skills behind the scenes. Associate members assist with activities as needed by department leadership without a permanent riding commitment, helping keep the department running.

Becoming a volunteer firefighter or EMT is a serious investment of time and a long-term commitment. Here is what is required to apply and to maintain active membership.
All applicants must:
Associate and Auxiliary members are not required to complete the physical or training courses.
Learn to recognize a hazardous materials incident, take protective action, use protective gear and the Emergency Response Guidebook, and safely assist with decontamination operations.
Gain the knowledge and skills to provide basic life support: assessing and managing medical and trauma patients, using the right equipment, and working alongside other emergency personnel in patient care and transport.
